Raw Hair Care 🎀
How to Care for Your Raw Hair
Raw hair is 100% human hair that has not been chemically processed.
Because the hair is no longer attached to the donor's scalp, it no longer
receives the natural oils and moisture it once did. This is why
hydration and proper maintenance are essential.
Just like your natural hair, raw hair can become dry, tangle or feel
different when it needs moisture. Each bundle is also unique and may
respond slightly differently to products and maintenance.
With the right routine, your CandalBeauty raw hair can last 1–3+ years and be reused across multiple installs. Consistent hydration, gentle detangling and proper maintenance make all the difference.
Wash Before Your First Install
Always wash and condition your raw hair before your first install.
- Gently detangle from the ends upward using your fingers, a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush.
- Wash with lukewarm water and a sulfate- and alcohol-free shampoo.
- Smooth the shampoo downward through the hair. Do not rub, twist or bunch the hair together, as this can cause tangling.
- Follow with a moisturizing conditioner.
- Gently detangle again while the hair is saturated with conditioner.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water.
- Allow the hair to air dry whenever possible.
Keep Your Raw Hair Hydrated
Moisture is one of the most important parts of maintaining raw hair. Once raw hair has been cut from its donor, it no longer receives natural moisture from the scalp.
- Use a moisturizing conditioner after every shampoo.
- Deep condition every 1–2 weeks, or whenever the hair needs extra hydration.
- Use lightweight, water-based leave-in products when additional moisture is needed.
- Avoid allowing the hair to become excessively dry before conditioning it.
Deep Condition When Needed
If your raw hair starts feeling dry, rough or more difficult to detangle, start with hydration.
- Saturate the hair with a good moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioning mask.
- Gently detangle from the ends upward while the conditioner is in the hair.
- Leave the treatment on for 30 minutes to 1 hour when the hair needs extra hydration.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water.
- Allow the hair to air dry completely.
- Reassess the hair once it is clean, conditioned and fully dry.
Air Dry Whenever Possible
Air drying helps minimize unnecessary heat and helps the hair retain moisture.
- Gently squeeze out excess water.
- Use a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt if needed.
- Never aggressively rub the hair with a towel.
- Lay bundles flat, hang them or place your wig on a wig stand.
- Avoid excessive blow-drying.
- If you need to blow dry, use a low heat setting.
- Never go to bed with wet or damp hair.
Protect Your Hair From Heat
Raw hair can be straightened, curled and styled with heat, but it is still human hair and can become damaged from excessive heat.
- Always use a heat protectant.
- Keep hot tools under 400°F.
- Avoid unnecessary repeated heat.
- Give the hair breaks between heat styling.
Protect Your Hair at Night
Friction and improper night care can contribute to dryness and tangling.
- Gently detangle from the ends upward before bed.
- Put the hair into a loose braid or protective style.
- Wear a satin or silk bonnet.
- Use a satin pillowcase for additional protection.
- Never sleep with the hair wet or heavily tangled.
Avoid Product Buildup
Raw hair usually performs best with a simple, lightweight routine.
- Avoid excessive oils, gels and heavy styling products.
- Use lightweight leave-ins or serums when needed.
- Shampoo approximately every 1–2 weeks, depending on your product use and lifestyle.
- Use sulfate-free products.
- If the hair has significant buildup, wash it before adding additional products.
Caring for Raw Curly Hair
Raw curly hair needs moisture and curl definition to bring out its natural pattern. Your curls may not look fully defined straight out of the package.
- Wash and condition before your first install.
- Detangle curly hair while it is damp or wet and conditioned.
- Use your fingers, a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush.
- Refresh with water and a lightweight moisturizing product as needed.
- Scrunch the hair upward to encourage the natural curl pattern.
- Air dry whenever possible.
If Your Raw Hair Feels Dry or Tangled
Raw hair is real human hair. Dryness or tangling does not automatically mean that the hair is damaged or poor quality.
Even genuine raw hair can become dry or tangle when it needs hydration or when the washing, detangling or maintenance routine needs to be adjusted.
If your hair becomes unusually dry or difficult to detangle:
- Apply a moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioning mask.
- Make sure the hair is thoroughly saturated.
- Gently detangle from the ends upward while the conditioner is in the hair.
- Allow the treatment to sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water.
- Allow the hair to air dry completely.
- Reassess the hair once it has been properly hydrated.
If you're still experiencing unusual dryness or tangling after properly washing and deep conditioning the hair, contact CandalBeauty so we can help you troubleshoot.
